Ericka Tyner Grodrian is Assistant Professor of Music at Valparaiso University where she teaches applied horn, chamber music, performance techniques, and musicianship courses. A graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Dr. Grodrian focused her dissertation research on the role of opera excerpts in recent American horn pedagogy. After presenting her findings at the 2012 International Women’s Brass Conference, she launched the project’s companion website Beyond the Short Call online where it is frequently used today by students and horn professionals alike.

An active pedagogue, Dr. Grodrian was previously Lecturer in Horn and Music Theory at Converse College, and Associate Instructor of Horn at Indiana University. She placed first in her division at the 2010 Susan Slaughter International Solo Brass Competition in Toronto, Ontario. A past winner of the Southeast Horn Workshop Horn Quartet Competition, she especially enjoys performing in chamber groups that explore interesting instrumentations and new works. Recent collaborations include performances with Bell(e) Collective, an all-female brass consortium, and the premiere of Mackenzie LaMont's ...across the plains, to Devils Tower (2016) for solo horn. As an orchestral hornist, she has performed with multiple groups throughout Indiana and the Southeast.

Her primary teachers include Jeff Nelsen, Richard Seraphinoff, Richard Deane, and Skip Snead. Away from the horn she enjoys gardening, cooking, working on her vintage 1900 house, and watching football with her husband, John, and their large standard poodle, Dexter.
